DVD Player Advice?

(Posted by adam)
I'd like to buy a cheap DVD player, and bet someone reading can tell me: Who's the Apex of 2007? That is, who's making cheap, consumer-friendly DVD players? I'd like one that's:
  • region-free
  • fully controllable (none of that "we're sorry, you have to watch the ads" crap)
  • good at error-correcting for scratched up DVDs.

Me four! Especially the "fully controllable" aspect.

My name brand DVD player was getting all snarky on burned disc so I grabbed the one I'd been using as a cd player in another room.

Turns out it's an APEX and it plays everything. It even says rOOT when it plays a burned disc without a menu. How great is that?

I'll make it five of a kind.

Ya know, with a little forethought, this all could have been hashed out at the security bloggers secret meeting, and a bulk discount obtained. But noooooo.....

A friend of mine had one of those Apex region-free DVD players, back about ten years ago. I remember the first thing I noticed about it was the audio was always out of sync with the video by a few frames. He didn't thank me for pointing this out. I was unimpressed, to say the least.
